It’s All About Priorities

A long distance cyclist is benefited by a basic understanding of physics and aerodynamics. Here at Team Cycopath, we are continually assessing our bicycle set up and luggage requirements to gain as many efficiencies as possible. Slick tyres inflated to high pressures reduce rolling resistance and lycra cycling apparel is adopted to gain the most aerodynamic rider profile possible. The team share a single toothpaste tube and sun screen bottle to save weight, while Jon and Sean even share a shaver. No stone is left unturned in our quest for energy conservation on the bikes. Occasionally though, certain team members lose their way or maybe just reassess their priorities. On a recent spot audit of Sean and Jon’s luggage, the following items with an estimated weight of 7 kilograms were found stashed in their bags upon leaving Dubrovnik:

1 litre gin

7 x 500ml beers (bottles and cans)

1 x container of honey

Maybe I can justify that second tube of toothpaste after all.

Tell Him He’s Dreamin’

The close quarters within which Team Cycopath sleep allow observation of the various nocturnal habits displayed by fellow team members. All team members have been accused of snoring like a freight train at various times (although Michael still denies any guilt on his part) and Jon has been known to talk incoherently in his sleep on occasion.  One of the more amusing incidents occurred when Michael awoke to find Jon ‘sleep cycling’. The accused was peddling under the covers at a frantic pace, whilst lying on his side. One theory put forward to explain this unusual behaviour involves Jon having a nightmare about being chased by the pack of Albanian goat herding guard dogs. Another hypothesis proposes that Jon was fantasising about breaking Sean’s land speed record. Whatever the explanation, we have all agreed that any cycling performed whilst asleep will not be counted towards the team’s official distance statistics.

  1. I’m guessing that the 7 kilos found by Tombsy would have been dramatically reduced by the next inspection. Badger, how did you go with the sailing? Team Cycopath, do you plans include crossing to the southern side of the Med again? Hope the fundraising is going well?

  2. Sleep cycling?? Ok, I believe that.

Boys, you missed out on a great 5th Annual Pub crawl on Saturday. Not sure you guys could have handled ’10 pints in 10 hours’ though – am looking forward to finding out this weekend whether the term ‘lightweight’ can be officially applied to you all.

  4. I seem to remember that you were slightly more complicit in the acquisition of those 7 kilograms than you are letting on…
